Crocus are a group of around 80 species from Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia to China, only around 30 species are in general cultivation. Crocus have corms and are related to Iris in the Iridaceae family. Crocus plants have grass like leaves and generally have a white stripe down the middle. Flower colour can vary with predominate shades of lilac, mauve, yellow and white. The stamens of Crocus sativus is collected to obtain the rare commodity, Saffron.
Once planted, Crocus need no further care and will give you pleasure for years on end with even more flowers, as they multiply each year. Perform best in cold climates. In mild-winter climates, chill Crocus vernus bulbs in the refrigerator for six weeks before planting.They make a magnificent show in the garden, in window boxes and in flowerpots.
